Drywall can be installed either horizontal or vertically. typically it is installed horizontal in Residential and Vertical in Commercial

Drywall has two factory edges one is tapered and the other is not and is called a butt joint. for the best drywall installation outside corners hold be either cut our butt edges and inside corners are best using the tapered edges. you should always put butt joint to butt joints and tapered to tapered and cut to cut if possible this makes taping easier. we use "hot" mud for bad  areas.  proper drywall installation is dependant on straight framing

fire rated drywall is usually 5/8" and used mostly for utility rooms that have a water heater or apartment & Condo party walls.
